Why We Wait Too Long to Capture What Matters

Mar 25 2026

There’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.

And it came into focus after a conversation I had this past week.

Someone told me that some of the things I’ve been sharing lately—about family, about time, about paying attention—were things he had felt for a long time, but didn’t always know how to say out loud.

That stopped me for a second.

Because I think that’s where a lot of us live.

We feel it.

We know time is moving.

We see our kids growing.
We feel shifts in our careers.
We recognize when something matters.

And yet… we wait.

We tell ourselves we’ll do it later

Later when things calm down.
Later when we feel more put together.
Later when life looks a little more like we imagined it would.

But the truth is—

Life doesn’t really slow down in the way we think it will.

It just keeps changing.

Quietly. Constantly.

And before we know it, we’re looking back at a season that felt ordinary at the time… and realizing it wasn’t ordinary at all.

I see this all the time

Families who wish they had captured their kids just a year earlier.

Seniors who suddenly realize how fast everything is moving once spring hits.

Professionals stepping into a new chapter who say,
“I probably should have done this a while ago.”

And none of it comes from neglect.

It comes from hesitation.

From overthinking.
From putting too much pressure on the idea of getting it “right.”
From believing it has to be a bigger production than it actually needs to be.

The truth is, it doesn’t have to be that complicated

Some of the most meaningful work I’ve ever created didn’t come from perfect conditions.

It came from people simply deciding:

“This matters. Let’s not wait.”

Not because everything was perfect.
But because it wasn’t.

Because their kids were in the middle of growing.
Because life felt a little chaotic.
Because they were in a transition.

And that’s exactly what made it worth capturing.

We’ve misunderstood what “perfect” means

Perfect isn’t everything lined up.

It’s not flawless expressions or controlled environments.

Perfect is:

The way your daughter laughs right now.
The way your family feels in this season.
The way your life actually looks—not the polished version of it.

That’s the part people miss when they wait.

They’re waiting for a version of life that doesn’t really exist.

And in doing that, they skip over the version that actually matters.

This isn’t really about photography

Not at its core.

It’s about paying attention.

It’s about recognizing that the things we think we’ll always remember…
are often the things we don’t document.

And over time, they fade.

Not completely. But enough.

And what’s left is a feeling that we wish we had held onto it a little more intentionally.

If you’ve been thinking about it…

This is the part where most people expect a pitch.

That’s not really what this is.

It’s more of a nudge.

If something has been on your mind—
your family, your senior, your work, even just yourself in this moment—

there’s probably a reason.

You don’t need to have it all figured out.

You don’t need the perfect plan.

You just need to start the conversation.

Because the only thing we can’t do later…

…is go back and capture it the way it is right now.

If this resonates, reach out.

We can keep it simple.
Start with a conversation.
And figure out what makes sense for you.

Let's Start a Conversation

Roben Bellomo - You’re definitely not alone there—I think most of us are better at waiting than we’d like to admit.

It’s funny how often we recognize what matters, but still put it off. Myself included at times.

Thanks for taking the time to join the conversation. It’s good to be reminded we’re not alone in it.

Rich - Very nice article, Roben! Excellent at pointing out procrastination, which I am good at.

Roben Bellomo - Thank you—I really appreciate that!

This one’s been on my mind for a while and is a topic I see (and live) all the time, so it means a lot to hear it resonated.
